Davies – We must focus on our own game

Worcester Valkyries Director of Rugby Roy Davies insists his side must focus on themselves ahead of this Saturday’s first home game of the Tyrrell’s Premier 15s season against Bristol Ladies Rugby at Sixways (kick-off 2pm).

Valkyries suffered a 46-12 defeat in their opening game of the campaign at Loughborough Lightning last weekend and Davies knows his side must cut out the mistakes if they’re to compete with his former club.

He said: “We were inaccurate in the things we tried to do against Lightning and it’s a case of getting our fundamentals right first before we worry about what Bristol are going to bring.

“We know Bristol are a good side but for us it’s all about focusing on our own game.”

Davies led Bristol to a top-of-the-table finish last season and knows they’ll be a tough nut to try and crack this weekend, especially after being beaten at home by Richmond Women last Sunday.

But he insists his youthful group are excited about the prospect of playing on the Sixways turf against one of last season’s standout sides.

He admitted: “There’s no doubt they’ll be extremely competitive and hurting after last week’s loss at home.

“But we’re very much focused on ourselves and will be looking to cut out the mistakes we made last weekend.”

With a very youthful squad and a number of players absent due to international commitments, Davies insists this season is very much about developing his new squad.

He explained: “This season is going to be very developmental for us.

“Last week was about finding out what our strengths and weaknesses were. We fielded a young side and there were players missing but there are certainly positives to take from the game.

“We know what we’re capable of, it’s just about getting the fundamentals right and executing them.

“I was really pleased with the progress of the side, it was clear that there is more work to do but that will come with training.

“We have a squad full of players that can cause other sides problems.”

Tickets for Saturday’s game are FREE for Warriors Season Ticket holders and Juniors while they are £5 on the gate for all others.
