Press Conference Notes

Director of Rugby Alan Solomons spoke to the press today ahead of Saturday’s Aviva Premiership clash with Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens (kick-off 4pm).

Here’s what he had to say:

Harlequins performance

  • It was a fantastic day. The guys performed well and we were the masters of our own destiny.
  • Donncha O’Callaghan deserved to finish on that note and it was great for Chris Pennell on his 200th appearance. Everyone wanted to perform for them.
  • We delivered a good performance and it was a great day for all involved.
  • There was a great crowd and it makes a massive difference to the players and team.

The season as a whole

  • We’ve played some terrific rugby this season but there has been some inconsistency at times. Consistency is a big work on for next year.
  • We’ve taken some big scalps such as Exeter Chiefs, Leicester Tigers and Newcastle Falcons. There is that ability there but it’s about consistency of performance.

Northampton Saints

  • It’ll be a tough game as they’re a good side and we’ll have to be at our best. We’re looking forward to the challenge.
  • They had a massive win at Leicester Tigers and produced a good performance at Wasps last weekend so they’re in good form.
  • We have to perform. If we don’t perform we won’t get a result.

Injury/selection news

  • Bryce Heem took a blow to the throat against Quins and we’ll assess him closer to the weekend.
  • Dorian Jones is going through the HIA protocol and if he passes that he’ll play.
  • Will Spencer won’t play as he’s in a boot (toe injury).

Post-season break

  • The players will get a five-week break after the season.
  • It is a hard, long season and after Saturday they’ll need those five weeks off.
  • Any players that play internationals in the summer will have extra time off as it is vital.
  • Joe Taufete’e is one of those who’ll be away with the USA.

Warriors players knocking on the door for England

  • I hope to see some in the England squad along with Ben Te’o. The likes of Will Spencer, Nick Schonert and Jack Singleton have been fantastic this season.
  • Singleton is just 21 and he’s a very good player at the set-piece and around the park. He has a good rugby brain and shows leadership skills.
  • Sharky (Schonert) has had a terrific season. His scrummaging has been excellent and he’s also been great around the park.
  • If they do go to South Africa it’ll be a good test as the Springboks will be up for it.
