Sixways Summer of Touch comes to a Sizzling end

Wednesday evening saw around 160 Touch rugby players brave the sweltering heat to compete in the Finals of the Inaugural Sixways Summer of Touch Leagues.

The 8 week long competition saw teams compete in a men’s and a mixed social league. It provided a great opportunity for members of the community who do not normally have the chance to compete in rugby activity a chance to play with and against regular players. Fathers enjoyed the opportunity to play alongside their more energetic sons and couples in the mixed league experienced the novelty of working together!

It wasn’t all light hearted entertainment though with the Worcester Wanderers competing in the men’s final against Merlins Mavericks captained by former Worcester player Dave Merlin. Merlins Mavericks were able to enter both leagues due to the strength and depth of the squad. Dave was joined by a few stars of the Worcester Ladies team including England Captain Jo Yapp, Welsh Captain Mel Berry, England stars Nicky Crawford and Kim Shaylor and ex-Ireland player Nicki Milne. Despite this the Worcester Wanderers scored three interception tries to win an enthralling game 9-5.

Merlins Mavericks also topped the mixed league and played against Malvern Wizards in the mixed final. Despite some great skills on display from the Wizards, Merlins Mavericks proved too strong and won the game, by strange coincidence, 9-5.

All participants stayed behind after the finals to enjoy a hard earned meal and a few social drinks. Winning teams were presented with a free meal from Nando’s chicken restaurant in Worcester whilst the runners up all received vouchers.

Next year looks set to be even more popular with all teams expressing their interest in participating again and countless enquires from other teams wishing to participate.
