Anthony Eddy has promised Warriors supporters that the players and back-room team will do whatever it takes to turn round their disappointing season.
The Sixways head coach’s pledge came after Worcester grabbed a late losing bonus-point try against Bath in a match that stuttered from start to finish.
The win was always going to the team whose front row provided the platform for field position and possession – though neither side managed to produce the goods, let alone the momentum, to lift proceedings above dour.
Referee Ashley Rowden frequently pulled both packs up on scrum technicalities, adding to the stop-start nature of an afternoon when the rugby rarely stumbled beyond third phase and handling errors outnumbered points scored.
“Without being critical of the referee, there was an issue all afternoon,” he said in answer to post-match questions about the problems Guinness Premiership teams have had at the scrum so far this season.
“There were so many free kicks and penalties that resulted. Both teams wanted to scrummage. It was a very stop-start affair and difficult for both teams to get a momentum. It certainly won’t bring the crowds back.”
On Chris Horsman’s third yellow card in three matches – given for offside when the tight-head was adjudged to have stepped through the gate at a ruck – and skipper Pat Sanderson’s binning late in the second half for killing the ball, Eddy reserved judgement.
“It’s extremely disappointing. We’ll be poring over the footage so that we can find out what they were for and do something about it.”
Warriors’ fourth defeat in as many matches leaves them at the foot of the Guinness Premiership table going in the EDF Energy Cup group stages.
“We have the answers, definitely,” he added. “If you look at the four games, our execution has let us down. When we’ve got the ball, we have to use it better. We’re just not being clinical enough with the opposition. We just have to put pressure on ourselves to be a better rugby team with ball in hand.
“The players are disappointed,” he continued. “We had a good week and put a lot of emphasis on this game. We wanted to walk away with four points. We’ve got two weeks of cup rugby before the next Premiership match. We’ll do all that’s possible to fix it.”
