“We’ve done it and enjoyed it, but we have to focus on the coming game” – that’s the message Warriors A team manager Andrew Stanley has given to his young stars as they prepare for Monday night’s clash with Newcastle, seven days after their historic 20-22 win on Leicester Tigers’ home turf.
The second string team’s 17-20 victory at Kingston Park, back in September, marked the point at which the Sixways youngsters started to believe that they could win Guinness A League Northern Conference matches in big grounds and against strong opposition.
Since then, they’ve taken Sale Jets to the limit and cemented their place in the conference mid-table with displays that have brought plaudits and record crowds from the Monday night faithful.
The coming Falcons match is expected to be no different.
“The game up there was the one that got us rolling,” says Stan. “It was a watershed for the boys. They realised that they could go to major stadiums and win.
“Make no mistake, though. Newcastle are still a dangerous side, as their victory at Sale last week suggests. We’ve got to make sure that we don’t get carried away with the win at Welford Road. That’s over and done with now. We’ve done it and enjoyed it, but we have to focus on the coming game.”
