Miles Benjamin admits he is ready to erase the painful memories of his last trip to Twickenham when he plays for Warriors in the Middlesex Sevens.
The 19-year-old Warriors star from Solihull is part of a 12-man squad for the tournament at the home of English rugby.
Benjamin also made the trip 12 months ago but his dreams of impressing the coaching staff were dashed when he fractured his fibula in the first game against Leicester Tigers.
Months of rest and rehab followed as the rising star battled back to full fitness under the watchful eye of the backroom team.
The wing wonder, who signed a new contract with the Academy last season, eventually made a quick-fire return and even featured for England in the IRB Under-19 World Championships.
And now he is ready to draw a line under a year of unfortunate injuries and setbacks by returning to Twickenham and finally hitting life in the fast lane.
“It was great to step out at Twickenham last season, unfortunately for me it didn’t have a great ending and I only last 90 seconds before my foot got stuck in the turf and I was tackled at the same time,” said Benjamin.
“I had only been at the club for about a month so I was really keen to make a good first impression.
“After things like that happen to you there are decisions to be made but it was an easy one for me, I wanted to come back and play rugby; that was all I was thinking.
“Now I am really excited about going back, you never know how many times you will get to play at Twickenham and on that turf so you have got to enjoy it.”
Benjamin was expected to be ruled out for longer after sustaining his leg injury but worked tirelessly around the club to make a successful comeback.
He returned to feature in several Academy games last season and admits he owes a debt of gratitude to the backroom team at Warriors and the level of intensive one-to-one rehab work he got.
“I had a few weeks off at first and with my dad being a doctor I could get good advice at home, but as soon as I came into the club the physiotherapists were excellent with me, I can’t thank them enough,” he said.
“Mike Lancaster did a lot of work with me, plenty of it out of his own time, to make sure I was progressing and on track.
“I got back after four months, earlier than I expected, and I owe that all to the work he did with me.
“Playing rugby again after being ruled out for a while was just fantastic, although my first game back I missed a tackle on the smallest player on the pitch and got plenty of grief off the boys!
“The England selectors also stood by me throughout and said when I was fit they would try and get me involved, they did just that with the World Championships call-up.”
Benjamin is now eager to make up for lost time and has shown his talents already during pre-season after training with the first team.
His desire and drive to get back into the thinking of the coaching team has now been rewarded with a place in the Middlesex Sevens squad and chance to taste competitive rugby under new Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock.
“It’s been great to be involved in pre-season and now we are all looking forward to Twickenham,” he said.
“We didn’t feel we did ourselves justice last year, but the new set-up want to make an impact, the boys are determined to put a marker down for the season.
“We’ve got a lot of confidence in the conditioning and skill work we have done, as a team we plan to play aggressively and really show what we can do.”
