Ruddock calls for positive reaction

Mike Ruddock has ordered his Warriors to bounce back from opening day defeat when they tackle European champions London Wasps at Sixways on Saturday (kick-off 5pm).

Ruddock has been delighted with the positive and upbeat mood in the camp this week, despite defeat at The Rec, as the clock kicks down to the opening league game of the Guinness Premiership season on home soil.

And the Director of Rugby believes his troops have now ironed out any flaws and fans will see a reaction from his Warriors this weekend.

“It’s vital we bounce back, we were disappointed by the Bath result and we have been through the game in detail and the mistakes that occurred,” he said.

“Our possession share was excellent and so was our territory, but our error count was just too high and we put pressure on ourselves,” he said.

“We’re looking to take a simple approach on Saturday and do the simple things well like dominate the game line. Hopefully some adjustments in attack and defence will help us and training has gone very well.

“We have a good tradition here (at Sixways) in terms of possession and territory. It’s important that we go at them and take the space up before they get there.

“The team has to defend well, we missed far too many tackles against Bath. However, we have been over that this week in detail and we’re confident that our shape and strategies will be much better.”

Ruddock revealed that Nick Runciman and Dominic Feaunati have both recovered from injury and are in contention for the game

That means only long-term absentees Tim Collier and Lee Best – plus the World Cup players – are unavailable while Wasps have been hit by a large number of players being away in France for the showpiece finals.

But the Warriors boss insists his team still fully expect a really tough encounter against Wasps.

“We will respect Wasps, whatever team they put out, they are European champions and they have a fantastic squad,” he added.

“Our focus, though, is getting our game in order because we let ourselves down at Bath and Iwant to see a reaction.”
