Rising star Wood under the knife

Worcester Warriors have confirmed that young back row star Tom Wood is set for a spell on the sidelines after having a groin operation.

Wood, a product of the Academy section at Sixways Stadium, has been one of the finds of the season and has made three Guinness Premiership appearances.

However, the 21-year-old has now gone under the knife to cure the problem and Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock admits he will miss the forthcoming cup clashes.

“He is facing four weeks out but he could be back quicker,” said Ruddock. “It’s a shame because he has been excellent for us and grown in stature and physicality.

“He was not too pleased when he was told he needed an operation because, like all the young bucks, he wants to be playing.

“But there is a little window with these European and cup games and hopefully he will be back in contention for the next round of league games.”

Ruddock has also confirmed that Ben Gotting is out for the rest of the season after the hooker had an operation on his knee.

“Ben was in contention to play this weekend but it is in his best interests to get his knee right,” he said.  “It has been something he has needed for a while but now his training was deteriating.”

Back row giant Gavin Quinnell has had a minor clear out operation on his knee but should return to training next week. Dale Rasmussen is rested for the London Irish game as he looks to recover from a foot injury.
