Every league game a cup final now – Griffiths

Head coach Clive Griffiths admits Warriors have nine ‘cup finals’ in the Guinness Premiership and has called on supporters to make a wall of sound on Friday night against London Irish (kick-off 8pm).

Warriors welcome the Exiles eager to return to winning ways after two defeats in London to Saracens and Harlequins.

Griffiths is keen to recapture the same atmosphere that saw Warriors claim a first win of the league season in the last home game with Bristol.

And he has ordered his players to now treat every game like a showpiece final as they bid to pull away from the foot of the Guinness Premiership.

“Every game is a cup final now, we have got nine league games left and six of those are at home, we have to make home advantage count,” he said.

“They are all big games now, there is no time to relax or take our foot off the gas. It’s disappointing to be where we are in the league – we have inflicted a lot of problems on ourselves. But now we have to forget that and look forward and be positive.

“We need the fans’ support because that helps us have a big home advantage, but if they get on the players’ backs it gives the opposition a lift. We need the supporters to stick with the team.

“We didn’t have a great start against Bristol but we turned that around and they never lost faith.

“London Irish are a very dangerous outfit, they will be very hard to breakdown but we’re hoping the short turnaround they have had will be telling in the second half.”

After clocking up a high penalty count in the recent games with Saracens and Harlequins – plus three sin bins – Griffiths revealed that action has been taken.

Referee Wayne Barnes spent a day at Sixways during the week reviewing the Quins match video with the players, highlighting what was going wrong.

“It is nice to get the opinion from a referee. We have been perplexed by some of the decisions that have been going against us,” added Griffiths.

“A different view point is always good for us because it has been frustrating.”
