History
There have only been eight meetings between these two teams, with Wasps winning four and there being two draws – one of which was 3-3 in 2007.
Wasps have not lost to Worcester since the 2005/06 season and in this fixture last year they won in emphatic style 49-12, consisting of seven converted tries.
Worcester’s last victory was also in quite some style, winning 37-8 and claiming a try scoring bonus.
Wasps have only ever won at home to Worcester, with the closest being in 2006/07 when they won by five points.
Trends and Trivia
Last week James Haskell filled the huge gap left by Lawrence Dallaglio at No.8 , and formed an all England back row with Joe Worsley and Tom Rees – this unit if proven to be successful could well feature together for England.
London Wasps scored 19 tries more than Worcester did last year, and scored an impressive 305 points at home last year – an average of 28 per game.
London Wasps scored 8 tries in the opening 10 minutes, whist Worcester only managed five. Worcester only scored 18 tries on the road last year.
Despite London Wasps’ much talked about blitz defence, Worcester conceded one try less than Wasps did last year, both under competition average with 48 and 47 respectively.
Wasps conceded 23 tries at home last season, just over two a game on average and Worcester conceded 28 tries on the road.
A total of 86% of Wasps’ squad last year was English, whilst only 65% of Worcester’s squad was.
Josh Lewsey is four tries short of Kenny Logan’s all time try scoring record for Wasps, and is only 6 short of his 50th try. Although Paul Sackey is catching up quickly, he has the best tries to match ratio, averaging a try in every other game.
Worcester will have one of the most exciting back threes in the Guinness Premiership this year. Seventy-eight times capped legendary Australian fullback Chris Latham is joining 18 times capped All Black Rico Gear at Sixways, and home grown talent Miles Benjamin is as equally as important for Worcester, the 20-year-old English winger scored 16 tries in 21 games across all competitions last year.
Wasps didn’t introduce any new players to the starting line up for their first game, whilst Worcester handed out two debuts – to Latham and outside half Matthew Jones.
Wasps were quiet over the summer, signing Serge Betsen as their big name signing to try and make up for Lawrence Dallaglio’s departure. The only two other signings were Mark Robinson from Northampton and Lachlan Mitchell from Sydney University.
