Eoghan relishing Warriors adventure

New boy Eoghan Hickey admits he can hardly wait to start his new ‘adventure’ at Worcester Warriors after checking in at Sixways Stadium for the first time.

Hickey, 27, has been signed by Warriors on loan from London Irish and the versatile back is set to feature in the European Challenge Cup clash with Bourgoin on Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

The Irishman took part in his first Worcester training session on Friday and has spoken about his desire to make his time at Warriors a big success.

“I have been starved of rugby in recent times so I just want to get out on the field and show what I am about,” said Hickey.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to join an ambitious club and it’s one I jumped at. Obviously it’s bad news for Loki Crichton and I wish him and Matthew Jones all the best with their recoveries, but it’s fortunate for me and I need to take this chance.

“I have spoken to Mike Ruddock about the style he wants to play and we share the same philosophy. He wants to attack and it can be an exciting brand of rugby which will be great to be a part of.

“From fly half or full back I want to be orchestrating the games for Warriors. Having faced Warriors I know what they are about and I believe I can be a big success for them.

“It’s an adventure for me. I’m looking forward to meeting the guys and settling in. I have played against Matthew Jones when I was at Leinster but apart from that it is all new faces,” he added.

“The club have some fantastic players with guys like Chris Latham and Rico Gear. I can only improve and learn as a player from spells with them around me. They can only help me improve.”

Hickey is pushing for a European debut for the club on Saturday afternoon and admits he wants to put on a big show for the Sixways faithful to show his real ability.

“I’m really keen to feature against Bourgoin in Europe, the team will be fired up after last week and it would be great to be part of that in front of a big crowd at Sixways,” he said.

“It’s going to be a crash course for me getting used to the plays but I plan to get my head down and get up to speed.

“No player wants to be sat watching and I came to Warriors to play, I want to be involved from the start.

“I can play at fly half or full back, as long as I am on the field and involved I am happy. I feel those positions are interchangeable so either is good to me.”
