Warriors hit by Pennell injury blow

Worcester Warriors have today confirmed that wing Chris Pennell will miss the rest of the season after rupturing his left anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during the European Challenge Cup clash with Bucuresti Oaks.

Versatile back Pennell, who has played 31 games and scored 32 points for Warriors, was enjoying an eye-catching season at Sixways Stadium having established himself on the wing.

However, the talented 21-year-old will now see a surgeon tomorrow and is expected to have a knee reconstruction operation next week.

Pennell is expected to be fit to return to Warriors training in pre-season ahead of the 2009/10 campaign.

Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock said: “Yet again it pains me to inform everyone associated with Worcester Warriors that we have suffered this type of injury and Chris Pennell has unfortunately ruptured his ACL.

“He will be out for the rest of the season and we now wish Chris a successful recovery from this setback.

“Chris is a great professional who has shown great maturity with dealing with setbacks in the past. He has previously broken his leg, for example, but overcame this blow to claim a first team contract.

“This shows the determination and the perseverance of this talented young footballer and I fully expect him to make a major impact when he returns next season.”
