Ruddock – Prepare for home cup finals

Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock has ordered his team to prepare for back-to-back home ‘cup finals’ in coming weeks at Sixways Stadium.

Worcester Warriors face London Wasps and Northampton Saints in successive weekends on home soil.

Ruddock admits it is crunch time for his team in those target games ahead of the trip to Bristol later in the season.

“We have got three massive games coming up and these are cup finals for us,” said Ruddock. “We have got Wasps at home, Northampton at home and a few weeks later Bristol away.

“It was important to share the load against Leicester, we have had to make a lot of tackles the last few weeks and to come to Leicester and get a result is going to take an effort from all 22 players. We tried to utilise as many of our 22 as possible and that is what we did.

“We feel that we are not playing to our full potential but next week, hopefully, we can get people like Chris Latham back and Hal Luscombe.

“It would have been nice to win at Leicester but it wasn’t a target game for us. But the next few weeks are massive target games for us, they are cup finals and we have to make sure we have everyone fit and in form for that.”

Ruddock admits the preparation for the visit of London Wasps starts immediately and he knows cutting out the penalties will be his top priority.

He said: “When you are continually hit back by penalties, and you are looking at two yellow cards as we did at Leicester, you are going to struggle to hit back in the game.

“We played 20 minutes of the whole second half with only 14 men then you are up against it having already conceded two tries in the first half. We must work on cutting it out.

“People will talk about our defence but when you are down to 14 men it is going to throw any defensive system out the window to a certain degree, you become under pressure because of penalties. It is a difficult one to judge our shape but the scoreboard has showed us we have a lot of work to do.”
