Retiring Powell named last day skipper

Scrum half Matt Powell will skipper Warriors on his farewell appearance for the club at Sixways Stadium on Saturday as Worcester face London Irish in the Guinness Premiership (kick-off 3pm).

Powell, who has announced he will retire at the end of the season and join the coaching staff at Warriors, is one of several changes made by Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock after a bruising local derby with Gloucester in the week.

Ryan Powell (toe), Willie Walker (calf), Dale Rasmussen (hip) and Marcel Garvey (hand) miss the game and so a reshuffle in the back division sees Rico Gear move to outside centre with Miles Benjamin and Charlie Fellows coming onto the wings.

Chris Fortey will start at hooker in the pack, Will Bowley returns with Greg Rawlinson (back) left out of the squad and James Collins starts in the back row with Pat Sanderson (calf) also given time to recover ahead of the European Challenge Cup semi-final with Bourgoin next weekend.

Jake Abbott, George Crook and Michael Penn are all named on the replacements bench.

Matthew Jones (foot) is replaced by Joe Carlisle and Ruddock has tipped his young fly half to take the chance to shine in the final league game of the season.

“Joe gets the opportunity at fly half and I’m sure, like all the other players, he will be keen to put in a performance ahead of the semi-final,” said Ruddock.

“He showed last year in the European final, when he came on a set up a try and then slotted a difficult conversion, that he has the ability and I’m sure he will take his latest opportunity.

“There were a lot of tired and sore bodies after a heroic defensive display against Gloucester. We have named a team that can get a result against London Irish but will also preserve our energy and fitness ahead of the game with Bourgoin.”
