Warriors visit for Acorns’ Sports Week

For the children who use Acorns Children’s Hospice summer couldn’t be more fun as its programme of activity weeks brings cars, animals, sports stars and dancers to entertain children staying for short breaks.

The six-week calendar of events has already seen a Dance Week, Transport Week and Sports Week, featuring special guests: the Worcester Line Dance Association, Worcester Belly Dancer ‘Tahirah’, Worcester Armed Rapid Response Unit complete with Police Dogs and handlers, Hereford & Worcester Fire Brigade, British Superbike Rider Si Andrews and players from Worcester Warriors Rugby Club.

Worcester Warriors’ Adam Black, Matt Cox, Kai Horstmann, Netani Talei, Joe Carlisle and James Collins popped in over two days during Acorns’ Sports Week. The players got stuck in with some fun games with the children, including manning a parachute and making it float so that children could pass underneath from side to side; orienteering around Acorns’ gardens collecting things along the way including pink cowboy hats for the players wear; indoor skittles, sensory games and pass the parcel. Each Warrior paired up with a child to ensure that everyone was involved. The players also joined some of the older children for some football tournaments on the Playstation. A certificate of achievement was given to each child at the end of Sports Week.

This week has been Animal Week at the children’s hospice with Animal Mania dropping by to bring exotic animals including lizards, snakes and chinchillas for the children to pet and see.

Sue Curry, acting Head of Care at Acorns for the Three Counties (the children’s hospice on Bath Road, Worcester) said: “It’s been a great few weeks and we’re just really very proud that even though Acorns has suffered financially from the recession we are still able to arrange these amazing activities for the children who come to Acorns. A big ‘thank you’ to everyone in the local community who has pitched in to make all of these wonderful activities happen; the children have absolutely loved it!”

Acorns cares for children who have a life limiting or a life threatening illness, and their families, with over 200 children and families currently accessing Acorns’ services in the Three Counties via the Worcester facility. Acorns also offers emergency and end-of-life care and becomes a home-from-home for the children and their families. All of Acorns services are completely free of charge, but it costs the charity £450 per day for each child’s care.

Still to come is the Music Week featuring World Music sessions from Chadsgrove School’s music teacher and a Mamma Mia tribute performed by the staff. Activities end with a Hawaiian bar-b-q on Friday 2nd September with help from Radio Wyvern’s Thunder Crew and local musicians Drum Love.
