Scrum and Forwards Coach Tony Windo has praised prop ace Adam Black for his impressive recent form in the front row at Warriors – and is now relishing watching the battle for starting spots in the pack heat up.
Black, who joined form Newport Gwent Dragons during the summer, has started the last four games in all competitions for Warriors.
But the return to full fitness of England hopeful Matt Mullan – who came off the bench against Northampton Saints – has now given the coaching staff at Sixways a real selection headache.
And Windo believes that red-hot competition for places, developing right across the team, can push the Warriors to even better performances and results in 2010.
“Matt Mullan has made great progress coming back from his injury, getting him out of the pitch last week was a really big boost for us,” said Windo.
“What we need to do now is keep building up his fitness and strength, I’m sure he will be there or thereabouts soon.
“But even if Matt is 100 percent fit there is no guarantee he is going to go straight back in.
“Adam Black is the starting loosehead prop for the club at the moment and I’m a big believer than if someone performs the person behind them has got to perform even better to get his shirt.
“It’s great to have these selection headaches,” added Windo. “Whether it is at half back or in our centre pairings with Dale Rasmussen fit, Alex Grove back from international duty, Sammy Tuitupou keen to play and young Greg King also after a spot.
“There is no god given right in this club for anyone to be selected for any game. In the front row, it’s down to Adam to continue doing what he is doing and for Matt to take it on to another level.”
