Ruddock to wait on Sanderson fitness

Director of Rugby Mike Ruddock has vowed to give inspirational skipper Pat Sanderson as long as possible to make the massive Guinness Premiership clash with Leeds Carnegie on Sunday (kick-off 3pm).

Sanderson was forced off against London Wasps last weekend with a stinger type injury and the Sixways medical team have been monitoring his progress all week.

Ruddock is keen for his talismanic captain to feature in the huge encounter but insists his team has other leaders who can stand up to the plate if needed.

“Pat is still sore with his stinger injury and a few guys are carry bumps and bruises, which is typical of this time of year,” he said.

“Nothing has been decided on Pat, he doesn’t go off in games very often and you literally have to drag him off.

“But he has settled down and if he comes through training and the team-run then he is fit to play.

“I’m hoping that we will be pretty much at full strength, other than the long term guys like Miles Benjamin and Matt Mullan.

Ruddock added: “We want Pat there, but we have leaders in team and Chris Latham would look to take over the captaincy, as he is officially our vice-captain at the club.

“We also have leaders like Kai Horstmann who is a very underestimated as a rugby player.

“We are hoping Pat is going to be fine and my instincts are he will be fine. But if he had to drop out then we have people who can step up to the mark and make good decisions at the right time.”
