Captain Chris Pennell is set for a six-month spell on the Sixways sidelines after fracturing his right ankle in the warm-up friendly victory over Newport Gwent Dragons on Tuesday night.
Full back Pennell climbed off the bench to score in the 45-10 win over a youthful Magners League side. However, with just minutes left in the match he was injured after taking the ball into contact.
Pennell underwent surgery on Wednesday for a fractured ankle and is set for six months out of action with a estimated return for the play offs in March.
Worcester Warriors would like to thank supporters for the many messages of support that have been received for Chris Pennell and will ensure that all are passed onto him.
“It’s a cruel blow for him,” said Head Coach Richard Hill. “He has had these kind of problems before he has already spoken to me and told me he will be back.
“Chris is a young man and I know a number of players that have had these kind of injuries. Some people are lucky and recover quickly and I know he will come back stronger.
“He was conscious and talking and what I noticed was how extremely positive he was straight away. He told me not to rule him out.
“Up until that point of the game it had been a decent performance, but what happened with Chris was so disappointing.
“We have other good players in Tom Arscott and Willie Walker, we are blessed with the back three and this injury means opportunities for other players. But for now all our thoughts are with Chris and we wish him all the best.”
