Pennell thanks supporters for backing

Club captain Chris Pennell has thanked the Sixways fans for their best wishes after suffering his ankle injury – and vowed to come back stronger in the future for Worcester Warriors.

Pennell has undergone successful surgery on his right leg and is now recuperating at home as he begins the road to recovery.

The full back is aiming to be back at Sixways in the coming weeks to watch Warriors in action and in the meantime has thanked the fans for all the messages of support.

“I want to say a huge thank you to all the fans. I massively appreciate all that has been done since my injury and those that have taken time to send me their best wishes,” said Pennell, who features in ‘The Warrior’ matchday programme this Saturday alongside new signing Tom Arscott and Craig Gillies.

“I’m already looking forward to getting back to Sixways and chatting with them and hopefully, as soon as possible, I can get out on the pitch and repay that faith in me.

“My leg injury is already getting better every day and the surgery went well. The road to recovery starts now for me and I can assure every fan that I will be back from this.”

Meanwhile, Head Coach Richard Hill has confirmed that summer recruit Rob Higgitt will be vice captain under Kai Horstmann for the opening game of the campaign but Pennell remains the long-term Sixways skipper.

“It is important that Kai, will step into his shoes to be captain on the field, but Chris is very much the captain,” he said.

“He is going to be very close to me and we are going to involve him in selection, involve him in the tactics and strategy. He will be doing everything that a captain should be doing apart from playing out on the field.”
