Sixways chief excited by opening day

Boss Richard Hill admits the excitement is building ahead of the opening day of the RFU Championship season against Birmingham & Solihull as he prepares to unveil his starting line-up.

The Sixways chief has indicated he will reveal his side on Thursday ahead of the local derby this Saturday (kick-off 3pm).

Dynamic back row Pat Sanderson is set to miss the Bees game with a rib injury, but lock Greg Rawlinson and prop Adam Black have both returned to training as the squad all push for a place for the big.

“We’re excited because we will have a good 22 on the field,” said Hill. “It has been an interesting process for me to assess which ones have really taken to the strategies that Phil Davies and I have put in place.

“I’m excited by the team we will have out there. We have some good players who are fast and athletic, they are fit, and we have some good ball players who have the intention of playing a fast open game – I am looking forward to seeing us play in a real competitive game.

“You can play all the pre-season games you like, but the test is to replicate the training and fast game in an entertaining style when there is the pressure of points at stake. Everyone is desperate to play. The 22 lucky ones will be raring to go.

“There will be surprises,” he added. “Everyone is guessing what the selection will be, but having seen us over the last three games what I can say is that I have been very pleased with some of the younger players that have come through.

“The younger ones have really stood up and excited the coaches and supporters, certainly in the two home games.”
