Head Coach Richard Hill ordered his Worcester Warriors to sharpen up after a second half comeback ensured a 37-18 victory over Moseley Rugby in a RFU Championship local derby at Billesley Common.
Table topping Worcester secured a try bonus point with tries from Jake Abbott, Callum Black, Tom Arscott and Andy Williams against his former side.
However, Hill pinpointed a catalogue of errors in the game as unacceptable and admitted he had let his squad know they had to raise standards
“It was a win with a bonus point – but I’m not entirely certain how we managed that extra point,” said Hill.
“Moseley performed very well and there was a point, halfway through the second half, where they had a bit of pressure and had they scored it could have been different. They were in the game for 55 to 60 minutes of the game
“There was a catalogue of errors throughout the team, a lack of precision and lack of urgency. That reflected in 50/50 balls and in defence, I could see a number of holes from the sidelines.
“Moseley scored two tries against us, but a better team like Bedford, for example, would have scored a lot more. We are going to have to raise our performances when we come up against the better teams.
“We looked like a side that thought we could just turn up and play. They have got to understand that is not the attitude. They have to raise their work rate.
“We got through it but I didn’t have to tell them. I told them anyway, though, because I wanted to get a few things off my chest. They made life very different for themselves and that should have been a bigger margin of victory.
“It was only the last part, when we brought the replacements on, that added impetus and we moved away from Moseley.
“We would rather play much better and go into the dressing room happy, but we made hard work of that.
“We have got to sharpen up. I can keep ranting and raving, but I felt we did enough work on Moseley to play better than we did. I will look at it and ask the players why too, between us we will come up with a solution.”
Moseley had stormed into an early lead as they shocked Warriors with a try from back row Michael Maltman before Jake Abbott leveled up matters.
However, Hill was left frustrated by the manner in which his team had conceded first half points at Billesley Common.
“We conceded a penalty for offside off an up and under then we had a scrum in our own 22, fumbled at the base and lost it, they then strolled across our line. Then we drop a high ball, scrum to them and we concede another penalty,” said the Worcester Head Coach.
“The 13 points were gifted to Moseley, they didn’t have to work for them, that was frustrating and I told the team how ridiculous that was at half-time.
“I thought we would come out and be better after the break but they scored a well worked try, a couple of errors on our part and that made it hard for ourselves.
“I was going to leave the changes until later on, but when that occurred changes had to be made.
“I thought Aleki Lutui brought us some physicality, Craig Gillies looked good and Adam Balding got us some go forward. I was pleased with that.
“Because we have a strong squad, when we bring on the replacements like Jonny Arr and Andy Goode they brought pace and zip into the game. The last 20 minutes we looked comfortable.
“I gave the starting 15 a chance in the second half to stamp their authority on the game, but even with the slope and wind we didn’t do it as we should have done.”
