High praise for record breaking Gillies

Head Coach Richard Hill has hailed lock star Craig Gillies as the ultimate professional – after revealing the giant second row will this week break the appearance record for Worcester Warriors.

Hill has confirmed that former England A star Gillies will start and make his 223rd appearance for the Warriors against Esher Rugby this Saturday at Sixways (kick-off 3pm).

That will see the 34-year-old set a new club record as he eclipses the current record for appearances held by legendary front row Tony Windo.

“Craig and I go back a long way,” said Hill “When I was at Bath, and had just finished playing, I tried to recruit him and get him into the Bath team when he was down in Devon in Tiverton.

“He was in a group when he was aged 18 with some very quality players like Trevor Woodman, Phil Greening, Phil Vickery, a very powerful England Colts side and a number of those played at Bath.

“I got to know Craig and he was an outstanding youngster. It has been interesting for me to track his progress, although I haven’t worked with him until now, during his time at Richmond, Scarlets and now at Worcester.

“He shows what a good professional is all about,” added Hill. “He has got longevity and is still very fit. We have just done our fitness tests and he has broken his previous best which is outstanding for a man who has been playing so much rugby.

“His attitude is superb. A nicer man you could not meet and a more dedicated professional you could not meet. I cannot speak any more highly of him.”
