Battling the big freeze for festive fixture

Worcester Warriors would advise supporters that the festive local derby with Moseley Rugby at Sixways Stadium this Tuesday, December 28 (kick-off 3pm) remains on as club officials work hard to try and get the green light for the big league battle.

The wintry weather and freezing conditions over the last few days has covered the stadium pitch with a blanket of thick snow that is protecting the playable playing surface.

Charlie Little, General Manager at Warriors, revealed all the staff at Sixways were now working around the clock to clear the pathways and roads around the entire complex in a bid to get the go ahead for the RFU Championship fixture.

He said: “At the moment, the match is on, but there is still a long way to go between now and the day of the game. There is several inches of snow on the pitch but that, along with the frost covers, has helped to insulate the playing surface and ensure it is still playable.

“We believe we made the right decision immediately after the Newport Rugby game in the British & Irish Cup to cover the pitch to protect it from the frost. Now we will watch the forecast and continue to monitor the weather over the coming days.

“We’ll be meeting with the Safety Advisory Group, which includes the police, ambulance service, fire brigade and the council, on Friday when we should be able to put out a little bit more information,” he added.

“It would not just be a case of clearing the snow from the pitch, we will have to ensure the surroundings areas and all the roads and paths around the ground are safe.

“We will grit and clear snow from Warriors Way onwards, but we also have to consider conditions on Pershore Lane, in the nearby Business Parks and also the motorway.

Little also praised resourceful fans who have offered to clear the pitch of snow in a bid to get the game on.

“We would like to thank the supporters for contacting the club to offer their help before we had even put out an appeal. We will now liaise with Worcester Rugby Supporters Club and let supporters know if we require them to pitch in to clear snow from the pitch and surrounding pathways.

“The game remains on and we will do all we can to get the go ahead – we all want a festive game to warm us up this Christmas.”
