Short aims to star for club and country

Rising star Andy Short is determined to celebrate his new two-year deal at Worcester Warriors by performing for both club and country during a busy period of top-class rugby.

Short, a product of the Academy system at Sixways, will start for the league leaders when they travel to Damson Park to face local rivals Birmingham & Solihull on Saturday (kick-off 2pm.)

The 19-year-old will then return to England Under-20 duty after his four-try heroics over Italy.

And Short admits the chance to pull on the Red Rose of England on home soil – as Sixways welcomes Super Sunday on Sunday, February 27 – was also a key date in his diary.

“To play for the first team at Warriors was my dream and that has come true. To start both games for the England Under-20s in recent weeks and now agree the deal at Sixways has really capped a special period for me,” said Short.

“I have enjoyed my two weeks away with the England Under-20s, it was a really good atmosphere and vibe. I can now look forward to playing at the weekend against Bees and pulling on a Warriors jersey again.

“After that it is back down to meet up with the England Under-20s for the chance to play at Sixways. To play for England on Super Sunday would be amazing. I was speaking to one of the lads who plays for Bath and he said facing Italy on his home ground last weekend was really special.

“I’m really happy and over the moon to put pen to paper and can now look forward to the next two years,” added Short.

“I have been connected to the club since I was around nine so it feels like home to me.

“The season has been great for me and gone really well. Players like Matt Kvesic, Ollie Frost and myself have benefitted from a new approach and been given the chance to put our case forward.

“Richard Hill has been really approachable and always wants us to push on – his influence on the younger guys is really helpful.

“He is always willing to spend time with you and tell you where you are, where you can get better which is ideal if you want to improve.”

Watch Andy Short as Sixways welcomes a triple-header of international rugby – England against France – on Super Sunday on February 27. England Women Under-20s (kick-off 11am), England Women (kick-off 1.05pm) and England Under-20s (kick-off 3.15pm) will all be in action.
