Chairman Cecil Duckworth has urged the people of Worcester to get right behind the Warriors in the RFU Championship play-offs – urging fans to make every voice count in the race for promotion to the Premiership.
The Pool A leaders face Nottingham Rugby at Sixways this Saturday (kick-off 3pm) before welcoming Bristol Rugby on Saturday, April 16 in what Mr. Duckworth has described as a crucial period of games as the club aims for a home semi-final in the play-offs.
Mr. Duckworth has praised the unwavering support of fans this season throughout the league campaign and now urged even more to come through the turnstiles and crank up the noise levels to make home advantage count in the season finale.
“We need all of our supporters and the people of Worcester to get right behind the Warriors as we embark on a crucial period of games,” he said.
“On average we have had over 6,000 supporters backing us throughout the season – they have been fantastic and a credit to the club. Now we want to really build that up and make home advantage count in the play-offs as we look to create a special atmosphere.
“We have Nottingham at home this Saturday and then Bristol on Saturday, April 16 – these two games are massive and vitally important to our chances of success.
“If we win the group we get a home semi-final on April 30, which is crucial as we want home advantage for this one-off game.
“If we become the best qualifying finalist we would also get to choose when we play at home in the two-legged final, should we make it. The prize at the end of that is what we all want – a place back in the Premiership and playing against the best players and clubs in England.”
Mr Duckworth added that Head Coach Richard Hill was building a special squad for next season and promotion back to the Premiership would be a huge boost for the entire city.
“Premiership rugby is important for the city and the local economy, from hotels to retailers, taxi drivers to engineers,” he added. “If the Warriors win there is always a feel good factor in the city for several days. The City of Worcester and the surrounding area needs to have the Warriors back in the Premiership. It is good for everyone.
“Richard Hill is in the process of assembling a very strong squad for next season and whilst it may be on people’s minds to wait until we get to the semi-final and final before they come to Sixways and back us we need everyone’s support to get to that stage. It is not an automatic.
“We have won 24 out of 25 league games we have played, but we are still not there yet. We have potentially six league games to go, four of which could be at home when our fans can make a difference.
“When I started out on this journey I wanted Worcester to become a true rugby city and I believe we have achieved that aim and deserve our place in the Premiership. But we have got to work for it and we want the people of Worcester to get right behind the team and help us achieve our aim.”
