Hill frustrated by home defeat to Irish

Head Coach Richard Hill could not hide his frustration as Worcester Warriors slipped to a 25-16 defeat to London Irish in the final Aviva Premiership match of the season at Sixways Stadium.

Wingers Marcel Garvey and Miles Benjamin both scored on their final appearance at the home of the Warriors for Worcester.

But impressive Irish claimed the points with tries from Joe Ansbro, Tom Homer and Delon Armitage.

“You don’t like losing and you don’t like losing at home. We have lost two consecutive games at home and we can play better than that,” said Hill.

“Against Exeter last week we lost but played well. I was expecting to see some of our attacking play from the second half against Exeter in the first half against Irish. I didn’t see any and I’m not going to even bother watching the first half video.

“It is frustrating because we can do it if we want to. But that first half was not good enough.

“It was a dire first half as far as we are concerned,” he added. “Fortunately we sharpened up a little bit in the second half.

“Why were we so lacklustre first half? I am not quite sure. Whether that is because of the result last night and the players relaxed after Newcastle lost against Saracens to make us mathematically safe I don’t know.

“It is disappointing because a lot of players there were playing their last games for the club and we needed a good performance.

“The first half was 18-6 to Irish and a very poor show. There wasn’t anybody on the field that really stood out for me and had any urgency.

“A little bit of a team talk was required at half-time and I had to make one or two changes to sharpen us up.

“Shaun Perry helped with his leadership and very combative attitude, Danny Gray came on and ran the game plan and gave us good shape.

“Bruce Douglas also came on and gradually we got the energy and urgency and started to realise that by holding onto the ball in rugby you can score some tries.

“We scored two tries and restored a little bit of pride in the second half and won 10-7, but going 18-6 down at the break was too much.”
