Nigel Redman named new Forwards Coach

Worcester Warriors is delighted to announce that former England lock Nigel Redman has today been appointed as the new Forwards Coach at Sixways and will return to the club for a second spell.

Redman rejoins the Warriors, where he previously worked as Academy Manager, after leaving his position as Elite Coach Development Manager at the RFU that he has held since 2008.

The former Bath lock left Sixways to become a National Academy Coach in 2004 and coached the national Under-21 and Under-19 teams before leading England Under-20 to a Six Nations Grand Slam and a Junior World Championship final in 2008.

Since then he has worked with Head of Elite Coach Development Kevin Bowring to support the development of coaches in England teams, the National Academy, Premiership and Championship clubs, and academies.

Redman, an RFU Level 5 Coach and a graduate of the UK Sport Elite Coach Programme, links up with former Bath and England teammate Richard Hill.

Redman also won 20 caps for England, making his debut when he was 19-years-old against Australia, and featured in two Rugby World Cups. He also represented the British & Irish Lions and captained them in South Africa in 1997 and has led the Barbarians.

Charlie Little, Managing Director at Warriors, said: “We are delighted to welcome Nigel to the Warriors. He was always our first choice and we believe he will work successfully alongside Richard Hill and give us a new-look coaching team that will move up the Aviva Premiership.

“Nigel in his previous roles with the RFU has proven himself to be technically a very good coach. He’s also worked very closely with other sports in terms of delivering his coaching philosophy to elite athletes.

“He is very well regarded by the RFU and young English players, the likes of Matt Mullan and Matt Kvesic who have worked with him before.

“Nigel has a point to prove about delivering in the Aviva Premiership which is something that we like. He will help develop the right culture and values and instil the right balance in the squad. He is also been successful as a player and coach and will bring that mentality to the club.

“We also know he will be able to work closely with Richard Hill, Phil Larder and the new Attack Coach which will be appointed imminently.

“I would also like to thank the RFU for allowing us to talk with him and subsequently bring him to the Warriors. We can now look forward to welcoming Nigel back to Sixways for our preparations ahead of the new campaign.”

Nigel Redman said: “It was a tough decision to make but I’m passionate about coaching people and I’m excited about what is happening at Worcester and want to be part of that process.

“Kevin Bowring, Rob Andrew (Professional Rugby Director) and Nathan Martin (Professional Rugby General Manager) at the RFU have been very supportive in getting me to where I am and in making my decision, and now I’m looking forward to working with Richard Hill, the coaches, players and people at Worcester.

“I’ve worked with great people on and off the field at the RFU. Over that time there’s been a rise in the number of good young players coming through and the way clubs and country have worked together has been brilliant. We’ve worked with an increasing number of coaches at Premiership and Championship level and see more and more taking their coaching badges, and the increasing number taking their skills back into clubs is very exciting for the game.”

Kevin Bowring, Head of Elite Coach Development at RFU,said: “Nigel will be sorely missed by us all and has made a great contribution in his time at the RFU. He developed and grew as a coach working with young players, then applied his skills and qualities to coaching coaches and I’m sure he’ll use those qualities to great effect at Worcester.

“He used his knowledge, experience and creative thinking to support me in the running of our elite coach development programme, and as a coach educator and mentor he helped others to solve their coaching problems and challenged them to do things differently. I know his efforts have been greatly appreciated by coaches in rugby and at UK Sport where he’s been influential as well. I wish him all the very best of luck at Worcester and I am sure this experience will further help him to grow as a person and as a coach.”
