Abbott excited about future at Warriors

Home-grown back row ace Jake Abbott admits he was ‘over the moon’ to sign a new contract at Warriors – and has revealed the excitement and focus ahead of pre-season is already kicking in.

Worcester-born and bred, Abbott has been connected to the club since the age of six as a mini/junior and has worked his way through the entire system to become a first team star.

The 24-year-old, who has made 49 appearances for Worcester, has now been rewarded for an eye catching first season back in the elite with a new contract beyond the next campaign.

Abbott described his decision to sign long-term to Warriors as a ‘no brainer’ as he looks to the future under new Forwards Coach Nigel Redman.

And he has urged fans to back a club where his heart lies in 2012/13 as the excitement ahead of a return to pre-season mounts.

“I’m over the moon to sign,” said Abbott. “I felt like I proved a point last season when I came back from injury and showed that I could break into the team and get some games. I backed myself and Richard Hill has now rewarded me with a new contract and showed faith in me.

“My heart lies with the club and I always want to be here with the club. When the offer came in it was a no brainer. I also took it as a big compliment as they offered me it when I still had one year left to run.

“Last season is full of happy memories when I look back,” he added. “The game with Saracens at home was fantastic and beating Gloucester here at Sixways was something special to be part of. I’m sure we can have many games like that next season and it would be great to see all the fans back supporting us again.

“I worked with Nigel Redman when I was part of the England Sevens set-up so I’m pleased by the new appointment. He came over to work with us when I was overseas with England and I got on really well with him. He has a great ethos and will make a big impression here. I am really looking forward to working with him again and massively excited about next season.

“I’ve been up to Sixways for some fitness work and we have two weeks until we are back and straight back into it. You start the focus now and we are all excited about next season and where we can take the club.”
