Vickery appointment a ‘statement of intent’

Managing Director Charlie Little has hailed the appointment of Phil Vickery as the new Assistant Forwards Coach at Warriors as a ‘massive statement of intent’ – and praised the qualities the former England skipper will bring to the Sixways role.

Warriors have today (Monday) confirmed that Vickery, capped 73 times by his country and a former British & Irish Lion, will join the coaching staff and work alongside new Forwards Coach Nigel Redman.

“As always, I am thoroughly impressed by Phil and know the impact he plans to make at Sixways,” said Little.

“When we met, we shared with him the vision and plans for the club going forward and how we wanted him to be a part of that. He was very enthusiastic and wants to be heavily involved so I am delighted to get him on board at the start of this next stage in our development.

“It would be foolish not to allow him to develop a very close working relationship with the front row forwards and we see this as a fantastic opportunity for the likes of Matt Mullan, George Porter and James Currie. To learn the trade at close hand from not only a Rugby World Cup winner but also an ex-England captain with vast Premiership experience is huge.

“Phil’s standing in the game is clear to all and he also brings the right beliefs, attitude and values to the club.

“I see it working really well. Phil has all the knowledge and experience that will be of great benefit and significance in the Aviva Premiership. But he will admit himself that he is in his early years as a rugby coach. However we have paired him up with Rugby World Cup winning defence coach Phil Larder and he will assist and work closely with Nigel Redman who, don’t forget, is leaving his Elite Coach Development role with the RFU to join the Warriors.

“This is a massive statement of intent from Warriors and we go into next season with real optimism. Knowing our supporters, I am sure that they will share in our excitement about this announcement and the coaching team being assembled. Having the right people in the support staff, creating the right environment and developing the Warriors squad will help us achieve our goals for the 2012/13 season.”
