Hill: New signings have winning mentality

Head Coach Richard Hill believes his side will have more of a winning mentality this season as a result of extra competition for places.

Hill added nine new players to his squad over the summer and he has already seen an improved attitude from everyone in training.

The Head Coach has been impressed by his players during pre-season and he admitted that everyone is competing well for a place in his starting line-up.

He said: “The players we’ve brought in are so competitive. They all clocked their opposite number as soon as they got here and you can tell they will fight for their place in the team. It’s a great attitude to come in with and it’s superb for me and the club.

“If a player wants to take someone else’s place they have to battle for it and you can see from day one they have embraced that challenge.”

According to Hill, this winning mentality has been lacking at Sixways in previous seasons but he now feels he has a squad which is ready to compete with the best teams in the Aviva Premiership.

He stated: “As a coach, you aim to have a dressing room full of players who will never give up, whatever the score is, and we now have that.

“If you look at the likes of James Percival, Shaun Perry and Sam Betty, you look in their eyes and they are winners. They do not want to lose games. And this season we will be in a position where we will be a match for every side in the league.

“I know that every player will give his all in the Warriors shirt and players won’t accept poor standards.

“In the past, the ball has been dropped in training and no one has said anything. Now the players are on at each other and there is that real competitive element which we need.”

With Warriors hosting Scarlets in their second pre-season friendly on Saturday, Hill is confident that his squad are on track to storm out of the blocks when the Aviva Premiership gets underway on September 1.

He added: “We’ve done everything we wanted to do by this stage of pre-season. We had a big coaches meeting on Tuesday evening and we all said we felt that we’ve achieved what we set out to achieve.

“We’ve got a better team of coaches and a better squad with a better attitude. We’ve also got a better programme in place for the players, which will show on the pitch.

“It’s very early days and there is still a lot of hard work to do but we are happy with where we are.”
