Boss demands more composure from team

Coach Richard Hill demanded his Warriors play with more accuracy and composure as they squandered chances in the 16-16 derby day draw with Gloucester Rugby at Sixways.

Prop James Currie crossed for his first ever Aviva Premiership try for Warriors as the points were shared.

But Hill insisted countless other chances had gone astray from the home side who cut the Gloucester defensive line on several occasions.

Hill said: “I certainly felt we created more than them. In the first 30 minutes it was us who was dominating most of the possession and territory.

“The likes of Nikki Walker, Chris Jones and Alex Grove made line breaks and in the first 30 minutes we should have had a few scores at least. But we lacked composure in the 22.

“At the start of the second half we again made some lovely line breaks and put huge pressure on Gloucester.

“There is a lot that is positive, we played well with the ball in hand and our defence was much improved from last week.

“Last year we had the problem of not being able to get into the opposition 22 and not have the opportunities to score. This season, when you look at Leicester and this game, we have had plenty of opportunities inside the strike zone and opposition 22 and now we have got to learn to be more composed to finish them off. We are squandering some very good breaks.”

Warriors now travel to Franklins Gardens to play Northampton Saints next Saturday and Hill admitted work would need to be done on the set piece to enjoy a strong afternoon in the East Midlands.

“There is work to be done. I was down at Bath last night to see them play Northampton and it revolves around the scrum. They will get the penalty, kick for the touch and drive the lineout and go for the penalty,” he said.

“That is very effective for Northampton. You have to get the scrum right because they will keep the ball at the back as long as they possibly can and wait for you so they can buy a penalty.

“You have got to stop them in other areas, but if you don’t stop them in the scrum it can be along afternoon.

“If you were watching the game with Gloucester and there were not many positives then I would be worried,” he added.

“But there are so many good things to take from it. I am bitterly disappointed, but it is a group that is playing better and better each week.

“We haven’t had the results, but we know if we continue to play like we are doing we will get results.”
