Warriors Director of Rugby Dean Ryan has vowed to focus on up-and-coming talent as he looks to build a squad capable of climbing the Aviva Premiership table.
Worcester handed full Premiership debuts to academy players Ben Howard and Richard de Carpentier as the last campaign came to an end and Ryan admits that the club’s youth development will be key in the future.
He said: “We need to place a heavy emphasis on making Sixways an aspirational place for youngsters so we’ve got to put a big priority on our academy.
“We’ve got to make the coaching a place of excellence so that when we are asked to go to those youngsters we are able to accelerate them through.
“I’m not pretending these things haven’t been said before but they’re a priority now.
“I’m not going to be looking at problem-solving over the next three or four months. These are processes that need to be put in place so that the benefits can be felt further down the line.”
With the first-team squad away on holiday over the next month, Ryan is busy planning for his first campaign in charge at Sixways.
And he admits he must divide his attention between the club’s long-term progression and the club’s short-term stability.
He continued: “If we invest in youngsters, if we improve our youngsters and if we make this a place where players feel they can develop, people will perceive us as a credible side.
“We’ve got a Premiership season that we’ve got to take on board and we’re going to have to fight very hard to make sure we can compete. Credibility in the Premiership is the first task and obviously when that comes you grow into it.
“The long-term aim is getting the structures and processes in place which makes this a sustainable, competitive environment. So I have to make sure the two are tied in.”
