Prince of Wales set for Sixways visit

The Prince of Wales is to visit Sixways Stadium next month as part of a historic ceremony for the Mercian Regiment.

The Prince of Wales, Colonel-in-Chief of the Mercian Regiment, will present new Colours to all four Battalions of the Regiment at the home of Warriors as well as meeting soldiers and their families.

After arriving at Sixways on Thursday 6 June, Prince Charles will meet Major General Andrew Sharpe, Colonel of The Mercian Regiment, before joining a reception for dignitaries and guests of the Regiment.

He will then move to the main pitch to receive a Royal salute, present the new Colours, inspect the ranks and make a short speech.

Next month’s visit will be the second time in four years that Sixways has been given the royal seal of approval after the Princess Royal officially opened the stadium development in 2009.

Warriors CEO Charles Cameron said: “It is a fantastic privilege for Sixways to be selected as the venue for the Mercian Regiment to receive their Colours.

“It is a great honour for the club to host such an historic event and everyone at the club is greatly looking forward to the visit of Prince Charles.”

The presentation of new Colours represents a special moment for The Mercian Regiment as it is the first time it has been presented with colours following its formation in 2007.

On the Colours are emblazoned the many battle honours that the Mercian Regiment’s antecedents gained over a period of more than 300 years of service.

Historically, The Colours formed a rallying point in battle as they could be seen from afar and were closely guarded.

From 2007 until now The Regiment’s Battalions have served under their antecedent Battalion’s Colours on numerous tours of Afghanistan and are extremely proud that Her Majesty The Queen has graciously bestowed on them New Mercian Colours.
