Hewitt pleased with Cavaliers progress this term

Academy Manager Mark Hewitt admits he is pleased by the progress Cavaliers have made this season.

His side finished their A League campaign with victory over Newcastle Falcons on Monday night.

And, according to Hewitt, Worcester’s second string have come a long way this season.

He said: “We’ve made massive strides forward from where we were last season, when we didn’t win a game.

“This year we’ve been really competitive and our youngsters have played with their hands on their hearts. They’ve worked hard for each other and we’ve reaped the rewards.”

Hewitt has been able to call on the experience of players such as Jonny Arr, Alex Grove and Euan Murray throughout the A League campaign.

And he believes the mix of established professionals and up-and-coming youngsters has allowed the side to benefit.

He continued: “These games are all about striking the right balance. You need senior pros with a bit of experience but you also need to get the youngsters involved and let them show what they can do.”

Cavaliers defeated Newcastle Falcons 18-8 in their final A League match after tries from Paul Hodgson and Ben Howard.

And Hewitt says he was pleased with his side’s performance. He added: “The boys battled hard and it was a good contest.

“We played really well in the first-half and then showed massive spirit defensively when we were put under pressure.

“We defended well across the line and showed great character so we were really pleased.”

Cavaliers face Oxford University this Sunday before their clash with Bristol in late November.
