Stephenson delighted with perfect Warriors debut

Winger James Stephenson says he was delighted to score a try on his debut, as Warriors won their first game of the 2013/14 campaign at Cardiff Blues in the LV= Cup.

Three tries in the first-half saw the visitors storm into a 21-6 lead at the break thanks to a fine display from the young back, before Cardiff fought back to make it 21-16 at the final whistle.

Stephenson said: “It was great to get my first try but even more satisfying to get our first win of the season.

“Everyone played their part from one to 15 and we showed what we are capable of with those three tries.”

After Warriors picked-up a first win of the campaign, Stephenson admits it could be a springboard for his side.

He added: “A win is a definite change in mentality. It’ll boost confidence and it’ll show we can come off this run.

“It will lift everyone and it’s going to change things. We will go in on Sunday and look at it and you know there will be some smiles on people’s faces. That feeling inside is going to turn into good actions and help us move forward.”

With Leicester Tigers the opponents next Friday, Stephenson is hoping for another opportunity to impress Director of Rugby Dean Ryan.

He concluded: “Fingers crossed I'll get another start. Today was a great opportunity for me. I’ve trained really hard and made sure when my opportunity did come, I was ready and raring to go and if I get another shot then I’ll try and prove myself again.

“Leicester are a physical side and will put us under pressure. They’ll try and squeeze us but we demonstrated tonight that we can withstand pressure.”

“If we get off to a good start like we did today we have a great chance of getting another win under our belt.”
