Betty relishing challenge against local rivals

Sam Betty admits he is looking forward to Warriors’ local derby battle with Gloucester Rugby this Sunday at Kingsholm (2pm kick-off).

The flanker knows how important the fixture is and could be up against former Warrior Matt Kvesic in the Gloucester side.

He said: “It’s a huge game. Not only because it’s a derby but because we are both at the foot of the table so we are definitely going there to win.

“Kingsholm is a tough place to go but we will be up for it. If I’m involved I’ll probably be up against Matt so it’ll be a tough afternoon but I’m certainly looking forward to it.”

The big-impact forward insists the game will be won or lost up front as Warriors search for that elusive first win of the campaign.

He added: “I think the game will be decided in the forwards. Our scrum and lineout have really been improving, which is a testament to the hard work we have been putting in at training.

“Gloucester have had some troubles up front so if we can contain their backs and dominate in the forward pack we should be able to get the result.”

Warriors produced a promising performance at Biarritz last week after a torrid 30 hours of travel and the former Cornish Pirates man believes the team showed commitment despite the circumstances.

He continued: “It was a tough time travelling last week but the boys didn’t moan. We just got on with it and played with plenty of heart and commitment.

“It was devastating to come up short but we are definitely going in the right direction. It’s a hard time with results but there is no doubt that we are putting all our effort and commitment into matches.”

Warriors are currently short of options in the back-row due to injuries and Betty admits he is looking to make himself an ever-present in the starting 15.

He concluded: “There isn’t much choice for the coaches at the moment in the back-row.

“But I’m happy to be playing regularly and I’m working hard to try and maintain my spot every week.”
