Hammond happy with win on injury return

Dean Hammond admitted he was delighted to return to the field in Saturday’s 20-13 win over Oyonnax at Sixways.

The South African was named in the Warriors replacements after five weeks on the sidelines but was soon amongst the action when he replaced Ben Howard in the fifth minute.

And the winger admitted the victory has changed the mood in the camp.

He said: “I have been itching to get back on the pitch. It has been frustrating over the last five weeks but I’ve just been trying to encourage the boys and motivate myself to do all the physiotherapy and work.

“But there isn’t a better feeling than to come back and get a win like that. You could see what it meant to everyone and it was all smiles in the changing room after the match.”

Warriors came from behind at half-time to overpower their French opponents in a dominant forwards display and Hammond recognised the hard work of the pack.

He added: “Considering the early injuries in the game and some of the guys having to play out of position, we did well.

“It was a dominant performance especially in the scrum. We executed a lot of things we wanted to that paid off for us.

“We adapted to the wet conditions and I think it was a performance that will certainly lift us going forward.”

Hammond played an integral role in Max Stelling’s second-half try against Oyonnax and explained what went through his mind as he set-up the England Under 20 man.

He admitted: “It all happened so quickly. You don’t visualise what’s going to happen. It is just pure instinct.

“I heard Max screaming on my inside so I tried to shove the ball to him and he did well to finish it off.”

Warriors are training in Portugal this week and Hammond insists it is a chance for the players to get into even better condition.

He concluded: “It will be good to have some better weather to train in as it has been difficult in recent weeks.

“We will evaluate our performance from the weekend and the camp will involve a lot of conditioning which should help us get in better shape.

“That can only help us going forward into the LV= Cup and Aviva Premiership and hopefully we can build on Saturday's performance.”
