Ryan – We shouldn’t be written off

Dean Ryan insists Warriors can’t be written-off in their quest to avoid Aviva Premiership relegation after their courageous performance against Bath Rugby at The Rec.

Warriors battled back from 22-5 down to within five points before a late Matt Banahan try robbed the visitors of a losing bonus point, and secured Bath a 32-20 win.

And the Director of Rugby is adamant his side have every chance against Saracens after their positive showing against Bath.

He said: “We can play well against a top-four side as it proved today away from home.

“We have to go to Saracens and if we lose there, people can write the headline. But it’s not over.”

Warriors ran-in three tries against Aviva Premiership play-off-chasers Bath, and almost secured a try bonus point in the final seconds.

And Ryan admits it was frustrating to come out of the game empty-handed.

He continued: “We’re disappointed we didn’t get something out of it. We had some momentum with us but we couldn’t quite nail it down.

“I feel for the boys because they are working so hard. We’re not a bad side and it’s starting to come together.

“We’re actually in a good space because we’ve got a great group. We’ve been under a lot of pressure for months, yet we’ve played some really good stuff under an awful amount of duress.”

The Warriors Director of Rugby was given the task of changing the club’s long-term fortunes when he took over the team last summer.

And with a host of players set to join in the summer, Ryan is confident the club are moving in the right direction.

He concluded: “Ultimately my job is to get this club moving forward and I think everyone can see we are starting to turn a corner.

“This group is travelling and we’ve got some young players joining us that want to get on the bandwagon.

“It’s about finding people in the middle who want to work really hard and getting people in around them with the right expertise to help them.

“We’ve just got better and better. I almost wish the season was five weeks longer and it’s the first time I’ve said that in 20 years.”
