Hughes targeting big time with Warriors

Worcester Cavaliers youngster Jon Hughes admits he wants to make the next big step in playing for Warriors.

The RGS Worcester pupil has represented Warriors’ second-string side throughout this season and has set his sights on a place in the first-team.

He said: “I want to play professionally and I’m working hard towards that. I try to get as much contact time as I can.

“I’m still at school so I usually come down to Sixways in my free periods and I’ve had a few kicking sessions with Sam Vesty and train with the boys whenever I can.

“The club has put a big emphasis on youth so I think it’s going to be a great place for youngsters over the next few years.”

Hughes tasted success at Sixways earlier this season when his RGS Worcester side beat King’s Worcester in the Modus Challenge Cup.

And the youngster is keen to achieve more success on the Sixways field.

He continued: “My first experience at Sixways was back in Year 11 for RGS and the atmosphere for those games is unbelievable.

“It was even more special to be running out on the pitch because I’ve grown up watching the Warriors out there so it was nice to play on the same pitch as them.”

The 18-year-old played against The Navy last week, after coming on in the first-half for Josh Watkins.

But Hughes, who is normally a full-back, had to fill-in for Watkins on the wing, although he admits it wasn’t an issue for him.

He explained: “I don’t normally play on the wing but I’ll slot in where I’m needed. Playing with Ben Howard has helped a lot because he is very vocal.

“It was a big thing for me playing here and feeling comfortable around the boys and they’ve been really accommodating.”

With a potential rugby career looming, the youngster admits his immediate target is to spend time in the gym.

He added: “I understand that a lot of players don’t make it so I’ve got a place at university, which may get put on hold depending on how this next year goes.

“My main priority at the moment is to get in the gym and put a bit of mass on. Then hopefully next season I can impress the coaches and get an opportunity to play for Warriors.”
