Ryan praises squad after Ospreys victory

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan hailed his new-look side after their 23-6 victory over Ospreys on Friday night.

Warriors defeated their Welsh counterparts courtesy of tries from Sam Smith, Nick Schonert and Ben Howard.

And Ryan admits it was rewarding to see the hard work of the last eight weeks pay off in the first outing of the campaign.

He said: “We've spent a lot of time trying to get this group in the right place and tonight they looked sharp against European opposition.

“Given the changes in personnel here, to hold composure under pressure was a huge bonus and it was really rewarding to see.

“We saw the guys in the scrum like Ryan Bower, Niall Annett and Nick Schonert, who were outstanding and caused huge problems.

“We haven't seen that group play together before and to drive the Ospreys all over the place effectively was outstanding.

With Warriors welcoming 18 new first-team players over the summer, the Warriors Director of Rugby insists his new-look squad will help the club on the pathway to success.

He continued: “I want people to see something different and tonight I think they did. We have a core within our group that really want this place to work and I think we showed that today.

“It was a collective effort. The defensive aspect was outstanding. We struggled to get that intensity defensively last year but we've got it in our first game here and we've got something to build on.

“We've got two more really tough pre-season matches and we've done that deliberately so that we set standards within ourselves that we're aspirational about achieving.”
