Taylor – Senior players are bringing us on

Academy youngster Huw Taylor insists Warriors’ senior players are aiding the youngsters’ development up the rugby ladder.

The 18-year-old recently impressed against a Yorkshire Carnegie Development Squad before again showcasing his talents in Worcester Cavaliers’ 34-17 victory over Gloucester United on Monday.

And he admitted that early morning sessions with some of the senior players and coaches at the club have really helped bring the youngsters on.

He said: “I’ve had a lot of one-on-ones with the coaches who have really helped me out and after a good performance last week in Leeds I feel like my confidence is building.

“I also need to keep learning off people like Mike Williams. He has taken me under his wing and it’s important to learn from these guys.

“We’ve got a lot of leaders at Warriors and the younger first-team and Academy boys can learn an awful lot from them.

“Some of those guys come in before we start training at 7am and help us with some of the things we’ve been struggling with.”

Taylor impressed during a full 80 minutes for the Cavaliers in their demolition of Gloucester United in the Aviva A League.

But the Academy starlet insisted it was an all-round team performance.

He continued: “The first 20 minutes were a real physical battle but then we got away from them.

“When we got the ball wide the backs were really clinical and showed a lot flair. They held onto the ball well in slippery conditions.

“And in the forwards we were happy with our defensive lineouts, often stealing the ball and we managed to work hard to get clean ball in rucks which allowed us to set-up the backs.”

And with Warriors starting their British & Irish Cup campaign next month, Taylor confirmed his sights are set on winning a debut appearance for the first-team.

He added: “I’d love to get a few games in the British & Irish Cup so that’s my main target this season.

“With the Cavaliers, I hope I can keep getting the nod to show what I can do and collectively, after the Gloucester performance, there’s no reason why we can’t target the Aviva A League play-offs.”
