Ryan pleased with first bonus-point win

Dean Ryan admits he was pleased to see his side secure a bonus-point victory against Doncaster Knights after a wet second-half at Castle Park.

Ryan oversaw his biggest victory as Warriors boss as his side racked-up four tries during a 32-16 triumph over last season’s National One champions.

And, according to the Director of Rugby, Warriors are moving in the right direction.

He said: “We’re still not playing as well as we would like but you have to get jobs done and a bonus point here at Doncaster with the rain coming in during the second-half is probably as much as we can expect.

“I’m pleased to keep winning and I’m pleased people keep improving. I thought the forwards were better today. We were smarter around the use of our scrum and driving lineout.

“But we’re still a bit frustrated we couldn’t get more momentum in the game. It’s a different challenge because you don’t get any momentum coming back at you so everything has to be self-created and we’re still learning that a little bit.”

Full-back Ben Howard again impressed in the absence of Chris Pennell, while centre Max Stelling went over for his first try of the season.

And Ryan was quick to pay tribute to his young backs.

He added: “Ben was outstanding again today. He’s a young lad coming in and taking his chance really well. He looks really mature and very composed at the back.

“He is clearly more self-confident. We keep telling him to back himself and he looks pretty good so I’m really pleased for him.

“It was nice to see Max take his chance as well. Some of our other lads haven’t necessarily found that little bit extra to beat a man and give us an edge so I’m pleased for Max.

“Ben and Max seem to have something a bit extra at this level so we’re going to keep pushing them in.”
