Warriors up for Grounds Team of the Year Award

Warriors have been shortlisted for the IOG Professional Rugby Union Grounds Team of the Year Award.

The Institute of Groundsmanship Industry Awards recognise the quality of sports facilities and are held in partnership with the British and International Golf Greenkeepers Association.

The two-man grounds team at Warriors of Martin Knight and Stuart Lambert maintain a total of 50 acres.

In addition to the Warriors’ stadium and training pitches, there are six senior and 13 junior pitches of varying size plus an indoor third-generation synthetic surface training area, which the duo have to maintain.

Sixways Stadium usually hosts between 30-35 games a season plus 80 training sessions and Knight said: “I’m delighted we’re up for this award because we take a lot of pride in how the pitch looks.

“Between me and Stu, we’re happy to work whatever hours to ensure every game goes ahead and in the summer, it’s not unusual for us to start at 5am and work through to 7pm to keep on top of all the mowing.

“It’s great that we are recognised for the work we are doing and hopefully we can go on to win the award.”

Warriors are up against Premiership side Harlequins of Twickenham Stoop for the award.

Both Warriors and Quins will be visited and judged by industry experts and the winners will be announced at stadiummk in Milton Keynes on Thursday 4 December.
