Ryan set to call on international duo for Jersey test

Dean Ryan says he will include Jonathan Thomas and Chris Pennell in his squad for the visit of Jersey this Friday.

The international duo have faced lengthy injury absences this season, paving the way for some of Warriors’ younger players to stake a claim for a regular first-team place.

But Ryan admits he will be pleased to have them back in action.

He said: “JT and Pens will expect to be in the 22 and we’ll get them some game-time hopefully.

“When the international boys come in I expect them to play like internationals and raise the standard again. We need our best players fit and hungry and worried about not getting picked.”

Ryan has built a team where competition for places in every position is evident, something which has allowed him to rotate his starting line-up from week to week.

And the Warriors Director of Rugby admits the extra competition has moved the club forward rapidly.

He continued: “It’s integral to anything that you get choice and competition because this isn’t a game you can revolve around 15 players.

“That means people won’t be playing every week. But when they do come in, they have to play well. You don’t get three or four games to find your form.

“It’s healthy at the moment. There’s a lot of people coming back to a place that’s going well.”

A win for Warriors on Friday night would see them leapfrog Bristol at the top of the Greene King IPA Championship table.

And Ryan believes his team are also learning in the environment of England’s second tier.

He added: “We’re not the finished article yet. We’re trying to use this Championship to grow our ability to read and adapt.

“We’ve always talked about travelling with the majority of this squad and we won’t stay static.”

Seated tickets for Friday’s game are available from £20 from the Warriors Box Office by calling 01905 459309 or clicking here.
