Warriors reach Sevens final

Warriors have been in Sevens action twice in the last few days where the young squad reached the semi-finals of Bury St Edmunds Sevens and the final at last night’s London Floodlit Sevens.

At Sunday’s Bury St Edmunds tournament, Mark Hewitt’s side beat Esher and Samurai Barracudas on their way to the quarter-finals where they ousted Bury Barbarians.

However, they were pipped by specialist Sevens side Apache in the semi-finals.

Yesterday evening, the young team went one better at the London Floodlit Sevens at Rosslyn Park.

After beating specialist teams SKRUM and Serious Stuff Pups, Warriors went on to defeat Loughborough Students in the semi-finals before being outdone by a strong Harlequins team 33-17 in the final.

Eighteen-year-old Huw Taylor captained the side with fellow Academy youngsters Josh Watkins and Jon Hughes also impressing for Warriors.

Warriors Under 18 players Robbie Smith (Hartpury College) and Ryan Scott-Young (Worcester Sixth Form College) also featured for the Sevens outfit.

Hewitt said: “These tournaments were a great opportunity for some of these young guys to step out of age-grade rugby and play with men.

“They came up against some quality opposition and experienced the physicality and pace of senior rugby which will only aid their development in the game.

“There were some promising performances and we did fantastically well to reach the final at Rosslyn Park but unfortunately couldn’t overcome a very strong Quins side.”
