All Black legend Carlos Spencer to coach Barbarians

The Barbarians will be coached by former All Black Carlos Spencer ahead of their clash with Warriors at Sixways on Saturday 5 September.

The 35-time capped New Zealander will lead the group of international stars against Dean Ryan’s men next month in what’s shaping up to be a tasty encounter.

With Springboks Bakkies Botha and Pierre Spies, and All Blacks Ali Williams and Carl Hayman in the forwards, Warriors’ pack will face the perfect test ahead of their campaign back in the Aviva Premiership.

And Coach Spencer has quite the rugby CV.

The half-back played for New Zealand Super Rugby side the Blues in the format’s first-ever game in 1996, and went on to represent them until 2005, winning the competition in 2003.

He made his first Test appearance for the All Blacks against Argentina in 1997, landing 33 points in a 93-8 win.

Having been selected for the All Blacks' 1999 World Cup squad but not playing through injury, Spencer finally made his mark at the 2003 tournament in Australia.

The former stand-off moved to Northampton Saints in 2005, enjoying a successful period with the Franklin’s Gardens side until he joined Premiership rivals Gloucester in 2009.

He then moved to South Africa to play for the Lions, before going on to coach with the club, and later having spells coaching at Sharks and Eastern Province Kings.

Come on down for a barbecue to meet the Barbarians side on Thursday 3 September before watching them on Saturday 5 September for just £45 for adults and £15 for juniors!
