Spencer – Warriors well-equipped for the Premiership

Carlos Spencer predicts Warriors will be “fine” in the Premiership after Dean Ryan’s side tested the world-renowned Barbarians on Saturday.

The former All Black international witnessed Warriors battle back to within five points of the Baa-Baas but a late penalty secured the win for the visitors in the 78th minute.

And Spencer said: “It was a good test especially in the second-half. Our boys got a bit tired towards the end and all credit to Worcester as they came out and played towards the end of the second-half like we knew they would.

“They probably thought we’d last about 60 minutes and they were right!

“I think they're well equipped for the Premiership and they'll be fine. This game is about opportunities and I’m sure they’ll take them.

“From what I saw they’ve got a bit of class and play a good brand of rugby which was quite open, so I wish them all the best for the new season.”

Warriors started brightly with skipper Phil Dowson touching down after just five minutes and Spencer admitted he was fearing the worst.

He explained: “I knew they’d come out fighting and after the first five minutes I thought here we go – this is going to be really tough. But our boys dug in which was good to see.

“However, we couldn’t get away from them when we probably needed one or two more tries to open up the game, but they defended well and credit to them.”

The Barbarians, who are known for their free-flowing rugby, may have surprised a few by going for the posts to seal the win.

But Coach Spencer insisted the decision shows the respect the Barbarians had for Warriors.

He added: “The call to kick the penalty at the end didn’t come from me but it’s all about winning, whether people agree with it or not.

“Ali Williams didn’t want to be a losing captain and it shows Worcester respect in the fact that we took the three points.”
