Heathcote relishing fly-half battle

Tom Heathcote insists he is relishing the competition at fly-half ahead of the new season.

The 23-year-old faces a battle against Championship play-off hero Ryan Lamb as well as Academy graduate Tiff Eden for the number ten shirt and says all three will be working hard to gain the jersey.

He said: “Part of the reason I came here was to have a shot at getting that starting berth and I’ve been training hard to state my case.

“Whoever starts the season at fly-half will be pushed hard and we'll all be looking to make the most of any opportunities.

“We’ll always look to drive each other on and that can only be good for all of our games.”

Heathcote made his debut for Warriors in Saturday’s game against the Barbarians and converted all five tries after slotting into a new-look backline.

And the fly-half is impressed with Warriors’ attacking options.

He revealed: “As backs we bounce ideas off each other and it’s important that nines and tens have a good relationship. Sam Vesty makes sure we all have input and it’s good to get ideas from the players.

“Personally I was pretty pleased with my performance, the kicking conditions were good and it was nice to convert five from five.”

The Scotland international moved to Worcester from Edinburgh and has also played Aviva Premiership Rugby with Bath.

And after a long pre-season, the stand-off is eager to get the new campaign underway.

He continued: “It’s been the toughest pre-season I’ve ever done. The boys have been working really hard and we’ve done lots of fitness and gym work.

“We want to become sustainable in the Aviva Premiership and we’ll need to learn quickly from week to week.”
