Van Velze – Added experience will help Warriors

Captain GJ van Velze says the added experience in the Warriors side will be invaluable during the 2015/16 Aviva Premiership campaign.

Director of Rugby Dean Ryan brought in a host of international players over the summer, including Donncha O’Callaghan, Phil Dowson and Wynand Olivier.

And, according to Van Velze, those players will have a huge impact on the club.

He said: “Dean identified where we need experienced players and brought in people who will add immensely to our squad.

“Phil and I played together at Northampton. He’s great around the club and has an exceptional way of dealing with young players by putting his arm around them.

“Donncha has been staying with me until he finds somewhere else. He’s extremely professional – a legend of the game – and he makes a massive difference on and off the pitch.”

Van Velze will again lead Warriors on their return to the Aviva Premiership as the side look to become a competitive force in the top-flight.

And as Northampton Saints prepare to visit Sixways tonight in the season-opener, the number-eight admits he is excited about the journey ahead.

He continued: “It’s a massive game tonight. To have Northampton at Sixways in our first match of the season is special.

“They were top of the pile last season so the game will certainly be a test of where we are.

“It’s the beginning again for us now and the hard work hasn’t stopped. From the Club’s point of view we’re extremely excited that Sixways will be hosting Premiership Rugby again.

“The season starts tonight but it really is a journey for us. It doesn’t end in November or if the results don’t go our way by Christmas – it’s a journey to the top and it starts now.”

Tickets will still be available at the gate for tonight's game!
