Saturday’s opponents – La Rochelle

Warriors face Atlantique Stade Rochelais aka La Rochelle, in the first game of their 2015/16 European Rugby Challenge Cup campaign this Saturday at Sixways (kick-off 3pm).

The French side arrive this week, currently sat in ninth position in the Top 14 after winning three from eight this season.

La Rochelle gained promotion to France’s top tier two seasons ago and finished in a respectable ninth place last year.

In Europe, they have played ten games against English opposition with three wins, six defeats and one draw.

La Rochelle is a port city of 80,000 people on the west coast of France above Bordeaux, and their rugby side play at the 15,000-capacity Stade Marcel-Deflandre.

Their squad boasts a number of recognisable names including France international prop Uini Atonio and Kiwi Romana Graham.

The giant Atonio, measuring in at 6ft 5ins, made his debut for France during the 2015 Six Nations and featured in their Rugby World Cup campaign, while Lock Graham previously plied his trade at Exeter Chiefs and Super Rugby outfit Waikato Chiefs.

The Challenge Cup includes five pools, with each winner and the three best runners-up qualifying for the quarter-finals, which take place in April.

Joining Warriors and La Rochelle in Pool Four are local rivals Gloucester Rugby and Italian side Zebre.
